10 Days Jewish Heritage: The Sephardic Trail
Synagogues, Mellahs, and the "Righteous Ones" (Tsadikim) from Casablanca to Fes.

Tour Overview
This pilgrimage traces the 2,000-year history of Jews in Morocco, from the Tovim (indigenous Amazigh Jews) to the Megorashim (exiles from Spain in 1492). Unlike standard tours, this itinerary focuses exclusively on the Hebraic legacy protected by the Moroccan Monarchy. You will visit the active synagogues of Casablanca, the ancient Mellahs (Jewish Quarters) of the Imperial Cities, and the hill-top shrines of the Hiloula saints. From the “Little Jerusalem” of Sefrou to the coastal wind of Essaouira (Mogador), this journey celebrates a story of coexistence, resilience, and memory.
Highlights
Museum of Moroccan Judaism: The only museum of its kind in the Arab world (Casablanca), housing Torah scrolls, Hanukkah lamps, and traditional Caftan styling.
Ibn Danan Synagogue: A private opening of this 17th-century jewel in Fes, a UNESCO site known for its wooden Ark and subterranean Mikveh.
The "Little Jerusalem": A day trip to Sefrou, site of the Kef Hamin cave and the historic Bhalil cemetery, once home to the highest concentration of Jews in Morocco.
Marrakech Mellah: Walk the Miara Cemetery, the largest in the country, and visit the Slat al-Azama Synagogue, founded by exiles from the Spanish Inquisition.
Rabbi Haim Pinto: Pilgrimage to the sanctuary of the revered Miracle Worker in Essaouira, a central site for the annual Hiloula.
Kosher-Style Hospitality: We select restaurants that offer "Kosher-Style" (Fish/Vegetarian) options or fully Kosher meals (Casablanca/Marrakech) upon request.

Detailed Itinerary
The Journey
"Upon arrival at Mohammed V Airport (CMN), your private driver transfers you to the city center. The tour begins at the Museum of Moroccan Judaism in the Oasis district—the only museum dedicated to Judaism in the Arab world. Here, you will see the Bimah from the Beni-Mellal synagogue and traditional Berber-Jewish jewelry. We then visit Temple Beth-El, the largest active synagogue, known for its massive stained-glass windows and Hebrew calligraphy. It remains the heart of the community for High Holidays. Dining: Welcome Dinner at "Le Cercle de l'Union" (The Jewish Club) or a certified Kosher restaurant like "Le Jardin du Casher"."

The Journey
"We drive north to Rabat, the political capital. We enter the Mellah of Rabat, viewing the Synagogue Rabbi Shalom Zaoui. The most significant stop is the Mausoleum of Mohammed V. Here, we pay respects to the King who famously refused to hand over Moroccan Jews to the Vichy Regime during WWII, declaring, 'There are no Jews in Morocco, only Moroccans.' We continue to Fes via the highway, arriving by late afternoon."

The Journey
"We enter the Fes Mellah, the first established in Morocco (1438). Key Visit: The Ibn Danan Synagogue, a 17th-century masterpiece restored by UNESCO. You will descend into the Mikveh (ritual bath) and see the gazelle-skin Torah scrolls. The Cemetery: We walk the white-washed tombs of the Jewish Cemetery to visit the shrine of Solica Hatchouel (Lalla Solica), the 19th-century martyr revered by both Jews and Muslims. Maimonides: We visit the house (exterior) where the great philosopher Maimonides (Rambam) lived and taught in the 12th century. Dining: Dinner at the Riad with a "Kosher-Style" menu (Fish baked in foil/Vegetarian)."

The Journey
"A short drive brings us to Sefrou, historically known as 'Little Jerusalem' because its population was once 50% Jewish. We visit the Em Habanim (Mother of Boys) school and walk through the Mellah, traversed by the Oued Aggai river. You will see the Kef Hamin (Cave of the Believer), a site of Jewish legend. On the return, we stop in Bhalil to see the unique troglodyte cave dwellings, some of which are still inhabited."

The Journey
"We visit Meknes, the Ismaili capital. In the Old Mellah, we visit the Synagogue of Rabbi David Benmidan, noted for its extensive Hebrew inscriptions on the walls. We continue to the Roman ruins of Volubilis. Your guide will point out the specific tombstone epitaphs in Hebrew/Greek that prove a Jewish presence in Morocco dating back to the Roman era (Toshavim roots)."

The Journey
"This is a travel day crossing the Middle Atlas Mountains. The landscape shifts from cedar forests to olive groves. We stop for lunch in Beni Mellal, a garden city at the foot of the mountains. Arrival in Marrakech by late afternoon. We recommend a relaxing evening at the Menara Gardens."

The Journey
"We explore the Marrakech Mellah, distinct for its high walls and proximity to the Royal Palace. Key Visit: The Slat al-Azama Synagogue (Synagogue of the Exiles), founded in 1492. It is built around a central courtyard with a fountain. The Miara Cemetery: We walk through the largest Jewish cemetery in Morocco. The guardian will guide us to the tombs of the Tzadikim, including Rabbi Hanania Ha-Cohen, a lion of the Marrakchi community. Dining: Dinner at a Kosher restaurant in the Gueliz district (e.g., Dar Ima)."

The Journey
"We drive west to the Atlantic coast. Essaouira (Mogador) is unique; in the 18th century, it was the only city in the Islamic world with a Jewish majority. Pilgrimage: We visit the Synagogue and Mausoleum of Rabbi Haim Pinto, a revered miracle worker. The Symbols: Walking the Medina, look above the doorframes to spot the Stars of David carved into the lintels of former Jewish homes."

The Journey
"We depart Essaouira and drive north to Safi, the historic center of Moroccan ceramics. Heritage Stop: We visit the Sanctuary of the Ouled Ben Zmirou. This complex houses the tombs of seven Jewish saints, led by Rabbi Abraham Ben Zmirou, a renowned 15th-century scholar and diplomat. It is a powerful site of 'Shared Sanctity', venerated by both Jews and Muslims, and a key destination for the annual Hiloula pilgrimage. We also view the Colline des Potiers (Potters' Hill), where Jewish artisans historically pioneered the metallic glazes used in Safi pottery. We arrive in Casablanca by late afternoon for your final evening."

The Journey
"Depending on your flight schedule, private transfer to Mohammed V International Airport (CMN). We ensure you are dropped at the correct terminal for your security checks."
