Ait Benhaddou
Recognized in 1987, Ait Benhaddou was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site for its exceptional example of traditional Moroccan architecture and its importance as a historical and cultural center in the region.
Ait Benhaddou is a stunning and historically significant ksar (fortified village) located in southern Morocco, near the edge of the Atlas Mountains. Ait Benhaddou historically served as a key stop along the caravan routes that connected Marrakech with the southern parts of Morocco, as well as with sub-Saharan Africa.
Its location along the Ounila River made it an important trading post, particularly for salt, gold, and other goods. The village is an exemplary model of traditional life in southern Morocco.
The houses are built close together, with narrow alleyways winding between them, creating a maze-like structure designed for defense. The tall, fortified walls and towers, as well as the use of locally sourced materials, reflect the ingenuity of the ancient Amazigh communities.
Visit Ait Benhaddou and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding desert and mountains. The ksar itself is perched on a hill, and the surrounding scenery is absolutely breathtaking, especially during sunrise and sunset when the soft light enhances the beauty of the mud-brick structures.
