Tour Overview

This private expedition traces the ancient Trans-Saharan Trade Route across the High Atlas Mountains. The journey begins by crossing the Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260m) to reach the crumbling splendor of the Telouet Kasbah, the former stronghold of Thami El Glaoui, the “Lord of the Atlas.” We then traverse the stunning Ounila Valley, a geological corridor of red sandstone and salt mines, to reach the Ksar of Ait-Ben-Haddou. This UNESCO World Heritage site is the finest example of Moroccan earthen clay architecture (pisé) and served as the backdrop for Gladiator, Game of Thrones (Yunkai), and Lawrence of Arabia.

Highlights

Tizi n'Tichka Pass: Cross the highest major mountain pass in North Africa (2,260m), dividing the Mediterranean climate from the pre-Sahara.

Telouet Kasbah: Explore the ruins and preserved Andalusian reception halls of the Glaoui Dynasty, a stark contrast of decay and opulence.

The Ounila Valley: Drive the scenic "Salt Route" connecting Telouet to Aït Benhaddou, famous for its troglodyte caves and river oases.

Ksar of Ait-Ben-Haddou: Walk the fortified streets of this 11th-century Ighrem (fortified village), analyzing the defensive mud-brick architecture.

Cinema Locations: Stand in the "Gladiator Arena" and the gate of "Yunkai" with a guide who knows the specific framing used by Ridley Scott and HBO.

Why Choose a Private Tour?

The "Asphalt Only" Route

Most budget bus tours stick to the main highway (N9), skipping the historic Telouet Kasbah and the Ounila Valley entirely because the roads are narrower. They drop you at Aït Benhaddou for a quick photo and rush back.

The "Complete Caravan" Loop

We utilize 4x4 vehicles (Prado) to take the Old Salt Road (P1506). This allows us to include the Telouet Kasbah and the dramatic Ounila canyon, connecting the historical dots between the "Lord of the Atlas" and the trade caravans.
