3 Days Desert Tour to Merzouga
The Essential Sahara: High Atlas, Kasbahs & Golden Dunes

Tour Overview
This 3 day desert tour from Marrakech to Merzouga is the definitive Moroccan road trip, covering 960 kilometers through the High Atlas Mountains, the pre-Saharan oases, and the Erg Chebbi dunes. Designed for travelers with limited time, this itinerary connects the imperial city of Marrakech with the Sahara Desert via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260m).
Unlike standard budget tours, this route prioritizes geological and historical sites over commercial shopping stops. You will explore the UNESCO World Heritage site of Aït Benhaddou, walk beneath the 300-meter limestone cliffs of Todra Gorge, and spend a night in a private tent in the Merzouga dunes. The return journey traverses the Anti-Atlas Mountains and the Draa Valley, home to Morocco’s largest date palm grove.

Detailed Itinerary
The Journey
"We depart Marrakech at 08:00, ascending the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka pass. We pause for photos at the summit before descending to the Ounila Valley to visit the Ksar of Aït Benhaddou. This UNESCO site is the finest example of southern Moroccan architecture. After lunch, we continue past Ouarzazate (the "Hollywood of Africa") and the Skoura Palm Grove. We traverse the Valley of the Roses, known for its damask rose distillation, before arriving at our hotel in the Dades Gorges, situated on the Dades River fault line."

The Journey
"The morning begins with a walk in the Todra Gorges, a massive fault dividing the High Atlas from the Jebel Saghro mountains. We then drive through the Tafilalet region, stopping in Erfoud to view Devonian-era fossils. In the afternoon, we leave the tarmac for an off-road 4x4 drive across the Black Desert, the dark volcanic plain at the edge of the Sahara, and stop in the village of Khamlia for a Gnaoua music performance. Then the terrain shifts to the Erg Chebbi sand sea. You will switch to dromedary camels for a trek into the dunes, 1 hour or 90 minutes as you prefer. Try sandboarding down the slopes and watch the sunset from a high crest before arriving at the camp. The evening includes a traditional Tagine dinner and Berber drumming around the fire."

The Journey
"We wake early for sunrise over the Algerian border. After breakfast, we take a different route back to complete the loop. We drive through the volcanic landscapes of the Anti-Atlas Mountains via the village of Alnif (famous for trilobite fossils). We join the Draa Valley at Agdz, following the longest river in Morocco. The final leg crosses the Tizi n'Tinififft pass (1,660m) and returns to Ouarzazate, before crossing the High Atlas back to Marrakech. Drop-off in Marrakech"
