Aït el Haj Ali (Old Mellah)

Aït el Haj Ali is one of Tinghir’s most important heritage quarters, identified by multiple travel sources as the old mellah, or former Jewish quarter. Its lanes and earthen architecture preserve a crucial chapter of southern Moroccan history, when Jewish families formed part of the commercial and social fabric of oasis towns across the region. Visiting Jewish Morocco notes that the kasbah area included the mellah and that a French soldier writing in 1930 described the kasbah as having 300 homes, with a Jewish quarter of 70 homes in the center. Today, the district is approached less as a museum site than as a living historic environment where memory, architecture, and local identity overlap. The atmosphere is intimate, with narrow passages, mud-brick surfaces, and views that connect the built settlement to the wider Todgha oasis. Travelers should visit with sensitivity, ideally accompanied by a knowledgeable local guide who can explain the history without reducing the quarter to a simple sightseeing stop. The area is especially meaningful for visitors interested in Morocco’s Jewish heritage, Amazigh towns, and the layered communities of the south. It pairs naturally with Ksar Tinghir, the Glaoui kasbah, and a walk through the palm grove. Aït el Haj Ali adds human depth to the Tinghir experience, reminding visitors that the oasis was shaped not only by geology and agriculture but also by diverse communities and centuries of exchange.
