Kechla Fortress & National Ceramics Museum

The Kechla, or Citadelle de la Kechla, is Safi’s great upper fortress and one of the most important historical monuments in the city. Travel sources describe it as a massive Portuguese-built fortress at the top end of the medina, roughly 500 meters from the coast, with ramps, garden courtyards, gunnery platforms, and commanding views over the old city. It was formerly used as a prison until 1990, adding a modern layer to a site already shaped by Safi’s Portuguese and later Moroccan history. The Kechla is also closely associated with the National Ceramics Museum, which displays Safiot pottery and broader Moroccan ceramic art inside the citadel. This combination makes the monument uniquely suited to Safi: it links fortification, urban viewpoint, prison memory, and the craft tradition that defines the city’s present-day identity. Visitors can use the Kechla to understand Safi from above, seeing how the medina, pottery quarter, seafront, and port fit together. The atmosphere is quieter than the market streets below, and the ramparts create excellent opportunities for photography and orientation. Some traveler sources mention a small admission for rampart access, but official pricing is not consistently published, so details should be checked locally. The Kechla is best visited with time for both the museum and the surrounding fortified spaces, making it one of the most complete historical stops in Safi.
