Central Rissani and the Souk
The central souk area is the beating heart of Rissani and the most immediate way to understand the town’s role as the last great market before the Sahara. Rather than a neatly defined tourist district, it is a practical old-town trading zone where market lanes fill with dates, nuts, spices, fruit, vegetables, olives, meat, chickens, wool rugs, brassware, household goods, animals, carts, and daily provisions from the surrounding Tafilalet. The strongest atmosphere comes on Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday, with Sunday often described as the busiest day. Early morning is best for animal sales and the most animated trading scenes. The souk is deeply local, and its appeal comes from authenticity rather than polish. Visitors should bring small Moroccan dirham notes, expect bargaining, and move slowly through the alleys with respect for vendors and residents. Rissani is mostly walkable, making this central area a natural base for exploring food stalls, madfouna bakeries, and nearby transport points. It is ideal for travelers who want to see real desert commerce, taste local dates, and experience the town’s role as a practical link between oasis villages, caravan memory, and the dunes beyond Merzouga.
