The Medina (UNESCO Site)

The Medina is the ancient, walled historic center of Meknes and part of the UNESCO-recognized Historic City of Meknes. Founded as a military settlement in the 11th century and later transformed under Sultan Moulay Ismail, this compact old city offers a quieter, more intimate alternative to the larger medinas of Fes and Marrakech. Its narrow lanes lead through traditional souks, craft workshops, neighborhood bakeries, small mosques, and everyday residential streets where the rhythm of local life remains strong. At the edge of the medina lies Place el-Hedim, the broad square that opens dramatically toward Bab Mansour and the imperial city beyond. Shopping here focuses on leather goods, textiles, metalwork, spices, ceramics, and local crafts, with damascene metalwork standing out as one of Meknes’s most distinctive artisan traditions. The atmosphere is lively but generally less overwhelming than Morocco’s busiest tourist markets, making it a rewarding place for slow exploration. Accommodation in and around the medina consists primarily of traditional guesthouses and riads, often restored around peaceful courtyards that provide a calm retreat from the lanes outside. Dining ranges from simple cafés near the square to modest local restaurants serving tagines, grilled meats, soups, and mint tea. This district is ideal for travelers who want immediate access to historic monuments, souks, and traditional urban life. Navigation can still be confusing, but the scale is manageable, and the medina rewards visitors who move patiently and allow time for detours.
