The Medina (UNESCO Site)

The Medina is Marrakech's walled historic center and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, built around Jemaa el-Fnaa and the souks that surround it. Jemaa el-Fnaa runs as a produce and juice-stall market by day and switches to food stalls, storytellers, and musicians after dark. The souks around it sell rugs, spices, brass lanterns, and leather goods, each craft grouped in its own street rather than mixed together. Zellij tilework, carved cedar, and courtyard riads define the architecture, and the Koutoubia Mosque, Saadian Tombs, and Bahia Palace anchor the district's landmarks. Dining ranges from simple rooftop cafés to small restaurants behind unmarked doors serving tagines and mint tea. Riads - restored courtyard houses - are the standard place to stay here rather than hotels. This is the district for first-time visitors who want the traditional center of the city; the alleys are genuinely disorienting, so budget extra time to find your way.
