Toubkal National Park

Toubkal National Park is the defining natural landmark around Imlil and the protected mountain environment that gives the village its role as a High Atlas gateway. Established in 1942, the park covers 380 km² and lies in the high mountains south of Marrakech, surrounding some of Morocco’s most dramatic peaks and valleys. For visitors based in Imlil, the park is not a distant attraction but the immediate landscape beyond the village paths, mule tracks, orchards, and trailheads. Its most famous summit is Jebel Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa, but the park also includes deep valleys, rocky passes, seasonal snowfields, and traditional Amazigh communities. Hiking conditions vary by season, with summer routes requiring fitness and winter conditions demanding more specialized preparation. The park is best explored with local guides who understand current weather, trail conditions, and access rules. Day walkers can enjoy lower routes toward waterfalls, Aroumd, and Sidi Chamharouch, while experienced trekkers may continue toward refuges and summit itineraries. Toubkal National Park makes Imlil one of Morocco’s most important mountain bases, combining accessible village hospitality with a serious alpine environment.
