City Center and Stone Lion

The City Center is the most immediate and recognizable visitor area of Ifrane, a compact mountain-town core defined by clean streets, red-roofed buildings, manicured green spaces, and an orderly Alpine-style atmosphere. Unlike the dense medinas of Morocco’s older imperial cities, this central area reflects Ifrane’s modern origins as a planned French protectorate hill station. The streets are easy to navigate on foot, making it the best base for first-time visitors who want to understand the city’s unusual character without needing a car. The celebrated Stone Lion, Ifrane’s best-known photographed landmark, sits in or near the central park area and serves as the symbolic anchor of the town. Around it, visitors find cafés, small restaurants, hotels, and shaded places to pause between walks. The atmosphere is calm and polished, with a cooler mountain climate that makes summer strolls especially comfortable and winter visits distinctly snowy when conditions allow. The district is ideal for families, couples, and travelers passing between Fès, Azrou, and the Middle Atlas forests. While it does not offer the vast souks or historic gates found in older Moroccan cities, it provides a rare urban scene in Morocco: a tidy, European-influenced mountain town where architecture, parks, and fresh air are the main attractions.
