The Port & Sqala du Port

The Port of Essaouira is the city’s working maritime quarter and one of the most recognizable scenes on Morocco’s Atlantic coast. Situated just outside the medina walls, it brings together fishing boats, seafood markets, port fortifications, gulls, nets, carts, and the constant movement of a real coastal economy. For many travelers, this is where Essaouira’s identity feels most immediate.

The atmosphere is lively, salty, and intensely visual. Rows of blue wooden boats fill the harbour, fishermen repair nets along the quays, and fresh catches are sorted, sold, and grilled nearby. The area is also linked to the Sqala du Port and Bab el-Marsa, two historic features that connect the maritime activity of the harbour with the defensive architecture of eighteenth-century Mogador.

Dining is the central pleasure here. Visitors can eat grilled fish and seafood in simple port-side settings or continue toward the medina for more formal restaurants. Photography is especially rewarding in the morning when boats return and in the late afternoon when the light warms the ramparts and harbour walls. The port is not a conventional accommodation district, but it lies within a short walk of medina riads and seafront hotels. It is ideal for seafood lovers, photographers, families, and travelers who want to see Essaouira as a living Atlantic port rather than only a preserved heritage site.
