Zagora (Market Town and Desert Gateway)
Zagora is the principal town and travel base of the lower Draa Valley, functioning as the practical gateway between the palm-grove corridor and the Sahara routes beyond. Set beside the Draa oasis system, it combines everyday market life, transport links, guesthouses, desert-tour agencies, and access to nearby palm groves and dunes. The town is less about a single landmark than about logistics and orientation: this is where travelers organize excursions to Tamegroute, the Tinfou dunes, M’Hamid, and Erg Chigaga. Its streets carry the rhythm of a regional center, with shops, cafés, workshops, and market stalls serving both local communities and visitors heading deeper south. The surrounding landscape provides the appeal, with green palms and adobe forms giving way to dry plains and desert mountains. Zagora is also a useful place to understand the valley’s caravan identity, since many routes toward the Sahara historically passed through this wider corridor. Accommodation ranges from simple hotels to kasbah-style stays and oasis lodges. The district is ideal for travelers who want services, transport options, and desert access without losing contact with the agricultural and architectural character of the Draa Valley.
