Tamnougalt (Historic Ksar and Kasbah)
Tamnougalt is one of the most important fortified settlements of the upper Draa Valley, situated near Agdz amid a dense date-palm oasis. The ksar and kasbah complex preserves the earthen architectural language that defines the valley, with high walls, narrow passages, shaded courtyards, and defensive forms shaped by caravan history. Walking through Tamnougalt feels like entering the built memory of the oasis, where family houses, storage spaces, towers, and communal lanes were arranged to protect both people and agricultural wealth. The atmosphere is calm and cinematic, especially in the late afternoon when the clay walls turn warm against the palms. Visitors usually explore with a local guide, learning how rammed earth, palm trunks, reeds, and mud plaster were used to create buildings suited to desert heat. The surrounding gardens add another layer to the visit, revealing how date palms, small crops, and water channels supported life in an otherwise arid environment. Tamnougalt is best suited to travelers interested in architecture, photography, and the social history of ksour. It also works as an excellent pairing with Agdz, providing the monumental heritage stop that introduces the long chain of fortified villages stretching south through the Draa Valley.
