Agdz (Northern Oasis Gateway)
Agdz is the northern gateway to the most scenic section of the Draa Valley, positioned south of Ouarzazate where the road descends toward the palm-filled corridor. The town is small and practical, serving as a market base for nearby villages, date plantations, and kasbah landscapes. Its setting below Jbel Kissane gives the area one of the most recognizable profiles in southern Morocco, with the mountain rising above palms, mud-brick walls, and the dry riverbed. The atmosphere in Agdz is quieter than Zagora, making it a rewarding first stop for travelers who want to slow down after crossing from the High Atlas. Visitors come for palm-grove walks, terrace views, weekly market life, and excursions toward the fortified village of Tamnougalt. The surrounding oasis reveals the classic rhythm of the Draa: irrigation channels, garden plots, date palms, and earthen architecture adapted to a hot, arid climate. Accommodation is usually in small guesthouses, kasbah-style lodges, and restored traditional homes that look toward the palmeraie. Agdz is ideal for road-trippers, photographers, and cultural travelers who want to enter the valley gradually before continuing south toward Zagora, Tamegroute, and the desert edge.
