Tisdrine Switchbacks
The Tisdrine switchbacks are the most photographed viewpoint on the Dadès Gorge road, instantly recognizable for their stacked hairpin bends climbing a steep canyon slope. The road north from Boumalne Dadès gradually rises into the High Atlas foothills before reaching this dramatic zigzag section, where the valley opens into a sweeping panorama of cliffs, roadway, and river-cut terrain. The viewpoint is not a historic gate in the medina sense, but it functions as a visual threshold into the more dramatic upper gorge. Travelers often stop at roadside terraces or viewpoints above the curves to photograph the engineering of the road against the natural geometry of the canyon. The site is especially popular at golden hour, when the red rock gains depth and the road lines become sharply defined. Driving the curves requires caution, patience, and attention to local traffic, particularly around blind bends and tour-vehicle stops. The lower approach from Boumalne Dadès is generally paved and manageable in a normal vehicle, but conditions can change after storms or during winter cold. For non-drivers, private taxis or organized tours from Boumalne Dadès can include the viewpoint as part of a half-day or full-day gorge visit. The Tisdrine switchbacks capture the essence of Dadès Valley: road adventure, canyon scale, and the striking meeting point of human access and mountain terrain.
