Monkey Fingers

Monkey Fingers, known in French as Les Doigts de Singes or Les Pattes de Singes, is one of the most distinctive natural attractions in Dadès Valley. Located near Tamellalt, the formation consists of tall, narrow, weathered sandstone shapes that resemble fingers rising from the valley floor. Unlike the sheer cliff faces of the main gorge, this landscape feels sculptural and intimate, with rounded ridges, narrow gullies, and walking passages that invite close exploration. The area is frequently included in guided hikes through Dadès Valley, particularly on routes around Tamellalt and Ait Sedrate Jbel El Soufla. Its appeal lies in both geology and setting: the formations stand close to villages, gardens, and guesthouses, making it possible to combine landscape walking with a glimpse of rural Amazigh life. A guide is useful for choosing the best canyon loop, avoiding confusing side paths, and adapting the walk to heat or seasonal conditions. The site is most comfortable in spring and autumn, though morning starts are wise throughout the warmer months. Photographers should allow time for changing light, as shadows reveal the texture and depth of the rock. Monkey Fingers is an essential stop for travelers who want Dadès Valley to be more than a scenic drive, offering a direct and memorable encounter with the valley’s eroded sandstone forms.
