Boumalne Dadès (Gateway Town)
Boumalne Dadès is the main gateway town for Dadès Valley and the practical base for travelers entering the gorge. Located in Tinghir Province in the Drâa-Tafilalet region, the town sits near the N10 at the outlet of the upper Dadès Valley, where desert plateau, river gardens, and High Atlas foothills begin to converge. With a 2014 census population of 12,328, it is modest in size but important in function, offering the valley’s most useful concentration of hotels, restaurants, markets, taxis, and local buses. The atmosphere is quieter and more functional than Morocco’s imperial cities, but it gives travelers a grounded view of everyday life in the south. The central market and main road area are key reference points, with shared taxis and minibuses commonly gathered near the heart of town. Wednesdays are associated with the traveling market in Boumalne Dadès, bringing produce, household goods, spices, textiles, and rural commerce into one lively space. From here, the road north leads toward Dadès Gorge, Tamellalt, Monkey Fingers, Tisdrine switchbacks, and the upper valley villages. Accommodation ranges from simple guesthouses to comfortable kasbah-style lodges, many of which organize drivers, guides, and meals. Boumalne Dadès is ideal for travelers who want a practical, well-connected base before exploring the canyon roads and village landscapes beyond.
