The Blue Medina
The Medina is the ancient, blue-painted heart of Chefchaouen and the area most travelers come to experience first. Set within the mountain town’s historic core, it is a compact maze of pedestrian lanes, arched passages, stairways, and whitewashed walls painted in layered shades of blue. The atmosphere is calmer than the larger imperial medinas of Morocco, with a slower rhythm shaped by local shops, small guesthouses, cafés, and residential courtyards. Souika, El Kharrazine, Rif Sebbanin, and El Onsar appear as useful orientation points inside and around the old town, though these areas are best understood as visitor neighborhoods rather than formal municipal districts. Shopping here centers on wool blankets, woven rugs, leather slippers, baskets, ceramics, natural soaps, herbs, spices, olive oil, mountain honey, and local goat cheese. The Medina is ideal for photographers, walkers, and first-time visitors who want the classic Blue City experience without rushing from monument to monument. Because reliable district polygon coordinates were not found for Chefchaouen’s informal neighborhoods, the boundary for this area is left unavailable rather than guessed.
