Bab El Onsar
Bab El Onsar is associated with the eastern side of Chefchaouen’s old town and is frequently useful in visitor orientation because it connects the Medina with Ras el-Maa and the hillside route toward the Spanish Mosque. While detailed historical documentation for this specific gate is less visible than for the Kasbah or Bab El Ain, travel sources identify El Onsar as an important area on the Medina’s eastern edge. The route has a distinct atmosphere, shifting from dense blue lanes into water, mountain air, and open views. For travelers, this gate area serves as a natural transition between the built heritage of Chefchaouen and the surrounding Rif landscape. It is often passed on walks that combine the Medina, Ras el-Maa, and the Spanish Mosque viewpoint in a single afternoon. The setting makes it one of the best places to understand why Chefchaouen is both a historic town and a mountain destination. Visitors should treat the area as an orientation landmark rather than a formally interpreted monument.
