Toubkal National Park

Toubkal National Park is the central protected landscape of the Moroccan High Atlas, located about 70 kilometers from Marrakech and covering approximately 380 square kilometers. Established in 1942, it contains Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in Morocco, the Atlas Mountains and North Africa, at 4,167 meters. The park is the core destination for serious trekking in the Marrakech-side Atlas. The landscape is defined by steep valleys, high ridges, rocky slopes, seasonal snow and Amazigh villages that support mountain travel through guiding, mule transport and guesthouses. Imlil is the principal access point for many of the most popular routes, including the standard Toubkal ascent and longer circuits through surrounding valleys. The park’s appeal lies in the combination of altitude, accessibility and cultural continuity, allowing travelers to move quickly from Marrakech into high mountain terrain. Safety planning is essential. Weather, altitude and winter snow can make conditions demanding, so guided treks are strongly recommended for unfamiliar routes and high elevations. For active travelers, Toubkal National Park is the defining natural monument of the Atlas Mountains.
