MOROCCO DAYS TOURS ...

Tin Mal Mosque

Tin Mal Mosque

Tin Mal, also written Tinmel, is one of the most important historic monuments in the High Atlas. The Great Mosque of Tinmel was constructed under Almohad sovereign Abd al-Mu’min in 1153, placing it at the heart of the religious and political history that shaped medieval Morocco. Set within a mountain village, it connects the remote valleys of the High Atlas with the rise of the Almohad movement and the wider history of North African architecture. Unlike the fortified ksour of the pre-Saharan south, Tin Mal is significant for its spiritual and dynastic associations rather than defensive scale. The monument reveals how the mountains were not simply a barrier, but a source of political authority, religious reform and cultural exchange. The September 2023 Al Haouz earthquake, centered nearby in the High Atlas, severely damaged the mosque - early assessments found roughly three-quarters of the structure destroyed - and reconstruction is still underway as of this writing. The site remains closed to the public and cannot currently be entered; check its current status before planning a visit. Even viewed from outside, the site and its setting remain a meaningful stop for travelers interested in the history and cultural geography of the Atlas Mountains.
