Middle Atlas

The Middle Atlas lies entirely within Morocco, north of the High Atlas and south of the Rif, offering a gentler and greener mountain experience than the rugged southern ranges. It is known for cedar forests, moderate elevations, volcanic lakes and cool upland towns such as Ifrane and Azrou. The landscape feels different from the arid passes of the High Atlas, with forested slopes, grazing plateaus and seasonal snow shaping a softer mountain atmosphere. This region is especially practical for travelers using Fes or Meknes as a gateway. Road trips often combine cedar-forest stops with small towns, lake viewpoints and onward routes toward Midelt or Imilchil. The Middle Atlas is not centered on a single famous summit in the same way as the Toubkal area, but it rewards slower travel through nature, village markets and scenic upland roads. Conditions vary by altitude and season, with winters capable of bringing cold temperatures and snow, while lower valleys remain more moderate. The Middle Atlas is ideal for travelers who want forest walks, wildlife encounters, cooler summer air and a quieter alternative to the heavily visited Marrakech-side mountain excursions.
