Imlil and Toubkal
Imlil is a small High Atlas village set at roughly 1,740–1,800 meters and widely regarded as the main trekking base for Mount Toubkal. Located about 70 kilometers from Marrakech within the wider Toubkal National Park area, it marks the point where many travelers leave the road behind and begin walking into the mountain valleys. Guesthouses, guiding teams, mule handlers and small village shops support everything from day hikes to multi-day summit expeditions. The landscape around Imlil is steep and dramatic. Trails pass walnut trees, terraced fields, stone houses and high ridgelines before climbing toward refuges and the Toubkal summit at 4,167 meters. Because the altitude gain can be rapid, travelers should plan carefully, pace themselves and pay attention to symptoms of altitude sickness. Winter conditions require particular caution, as snow and freezing temperatures can transform familiar routes into serious mountain terrain. Imlil is ideal for active travelers, trekkers and visitors who want an accessible but authentic High Atlas experience from Marrakech. Even without attempting the summit, the surrounding valleys offer rewarding walks, village viewpoints and a clear sense of Morocco’s highland culture. Imlil village itself was affected by the September 2023 earthquake - many homes were damaged, though without major structural collapse - and trekking and guesthouse operations have since resumed and are running normally.
