High Atlas

The High Atlas is the highest and most emblematic section of Morocco’s mountain system, rising across central Morocco and forming a physical and cultural barrier between the northern plains and the pre-Saharan south. It contains Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in Morocco, the Atlas Mountains and North Africa, at 4,167 meters. The region is defined by snow-dusted summits, steep valleys, terraced fields, earthen villages and roads that twist over historic passes toward Ouarzazate and the desert-edge routes beyond. The atmosphere in the High Atlas is deeply rural and strongly associated with Amazigh communities. Villages such as Imlil, Asni, Ouirgane and those in the Ourika and Ounila valleys serve as practical bases for trekking, day hikes, mule routes and cultural visits. The range is also home to Toubkal National Park, a protected mountain landscape established in 1942 and covering about 380 square kilometers. Travel here is highly seasonal. Spring and autumn generally offer moderate trekking conditions, while winter can bring snow and freezing temperatures at higher elevations. The High Atlas is ideal for hikers, photographers, road-trippers and travelers seeking a powerful contrast to Morocco’s imperial cities. It is also the main mountain region accessed from Marrakech, making it the most practical Atlas destination for first-time visitors. The region was significantly affected by the September 2023 Al Haouz earthquake, and reconstruction remains visible in some villages, though trekking and hospitality operations have substantially recovered and are running normally.
