Dadès and Todra Gorges
The Dadès and Todra gorges form one of the most dramatic landscapes on the eastern and southern High Atlas route toward the pre-Sahara. Here, river valleys cut through steep rock walls, palm groves and fortified villages, creating a striking corridor between the mountains and the desert-edge towns beyond. Tinghir, returned at approximately 31.520464° N, 5.530234° W, is a practical reference point for the Todra Gorge area. The atmosphere is rugged, cinematic and strongly tied to overland travel. Visitors often reach the gorges as part of a road trip linking Marrakech, Tizi n’Tichka, Ouarzazate, the Dadès Valley, Todra Gorge and desert routes farther east. The scenery changes constantly, from cultivated valley floors to towering cliffs and dry highland plateaus. Walking routes, viewpoint stops and village guesthouses provide a slower way to experience the canyons. This region is ideal for road-trippers, photographers and travelers drawn to Morocco’s transition zone between mountain and pre-Saharan landscapes. While less convenient as a quick day trip from Marrakech, it rewards those who build time into their itinerary for the long road east.
