Borj Al Kamra

Borj Al Kamra is one of Asilah’s most emblematic fortified monuments and a key point for understanding the town’s Portuguese military legacy. Archnet links the tower to the Portuguese reconstruction of the city walls and fortifications around 1509, describing it as a structure used for storage and surveillance. Standing near Bab el Bahar, it forms a powerful architectural pairing with the Sea Gate and the surrounding ramparts. The tower’s square mass and strategic position reveal the defensive logic of Asilah’s Atlantic setting, where visibility, control, and access to the sea were essential. Today, Borj Al Kamra is a landmark for visitors moving through the old town and toward the ocean-facing walls. It is often identified with the area around Place Ibn Khaldun and the Grand Mosque, making it easy to include in a compact walking route through the medina. The monument is especially effective as a visual anchor: its stonework contrasts with the whitewashed houses, blue details, and painted murals that define modern Asilah’s artistic identity. Photographers will find strong compositions in the late afternoon, when the light emphasizes the geometry of the walls and tower. As a surviving feature of the fifteenth- and early sixteenth-century fortification system, Borj Al Kamra remains one of the clearest physical links between Asilah’s coastal beauty and its defensive past.
