The Modern Village
The Modern Village sits across the Ounila River from the historic ksar and functions as the practical base for most visits to Aït Benhaddou. While the old fortified settlement remains the visual and heritage centerpiece, many residents moved to this newer side, and most guesthouses, small hotels, restaurants, cafés, parking areas, and tour services are found here. The atmosphere is relaxed and functional, shaped by travelers arriving from Marrakech, Ouarzazate, Telouet, and the desert routes beyond. Streets are easier to navigate than the lanes of the old ksar, and the area offers the essential comforts that make an overnight stay possible, including terraces with views toward the clay towers. Restaurants often serve tagines, couscous, mint tea, and simple Moroccan meals, with some terraces positioned specifically to frame the UNESCO site across the river. The modern village is also where visitors typically arrange local guides, negotiate transport, buy small souvenirs, and meet drivers for day trips or regional circuits. It is an excellent base for travelers who want to experience the ksar at sunrise or sunset rather than rushing through on a long day trip. Accommodation here tends to be intimate and locally run, with kasbah-style guesthouses, family riads, and simple lodgings that emphasize views and proximity. This area is best for practical travelers, photographers planning multiple visits to the viewpoint, and anyone who wants immediate access to the old ksar without staying in the larger town of Ouarzazate.
