Agadir Oufella Kasbah

Agadir Oufella is the defining historic monument of the city, a hilltop kasbah and fortification overlooking the Atlantic bay, port, and rebuilt urban center below. The site housed the old city of Agadir before the devastating 1960 earthquake, which destroyed or severely damaged much of the historic fabric. Historical sources associate the kasbah with the Saadian period and the protection of the city and port from Portuguese threats, although exact construction dates vary in travel and history references. What remains today is a powerful landscape of ramparts, restored sections, ruins, panoramic terraces, and memory. The south wall was partly destroyed by the earthquake, and restoration work has focused on stabilizing the historic character while respecting the trauma of the site. The hillside is also marked by the illuminated Arabic inscription commonly translated as “God, Country, King,” a phrase closely associated with Moroccan national identity. For travelers, Agadir Oufella is both a viewpoint and a memorial space. The views stretch across the beach, Marina, port, and modern city, making it one of the best places to understand Agadir’s geography. Visiting near sunset is especially popular, when the Atlantic light reveals the scale of the rebuilt city below.
