Ziz Gorges & Hassan Addakhil Dam

The Ziz Gorges and Hassan Addakhil Dam area form the dramatic northern entrance to the valley landscape. Located north of Errachidia, this section is defined by steep rock walls, winding road viewpoints and the reservoir that collects the waters of the Oued Ziz before they irrigate the oasis lands downstream. Travel sources commonly place the dam around 10–15 km north of Errachidia, making it one of the easiest scenic detours for visitors based in the city. The drive is especially memorable because the road shifts quickly from open arid plateau into a carved gorge environment, revealing why this river corridor has long structured settlement, agriculture and movement across the southeast. The Hassan Addakhil Dam is also an important modern infrastructure site, associated with irrigation for Ziz Valley and Tafilalet agricultural lands and flood protection for Errachidia and the lower plain. Travelers usually visit for views rather than formal sightseeing, stopping where safe to photograph the contrast between blue water, ochre cliffs and desert slopes. This area is best experienced by car or with a driver, as public transport does not easily serve individual viewpoints. For photographers and road-trippers, it provides the cinematic opening chapter of the Ziz Valley journey before the route descends toward Meski, Aoufous and the palm groves.
