Ziz Gorges
The Ziz Gorges are the most dramatic natural entrance to the valley, forming a rugged passage north of Errachidia where the Oued Ziz cuts through arid rock before opening toward the palm groves of the south. The gorge road is a highlight for travelers moving between the Middle Atlas and the Sahara, offering sharp bends, cliff views and a strong sense of arrival into southeastern Morocco. One road source describes the gorge route between Errachidia and Kerrandou as more than 50 km, with the Hassan Addakhil reservoir along the way. The scenery is defined by contrast: dry stone slopes, a narrow river corridor and sudden glimpses of cultivated land where water allows life to gather. Unlike formal monuments, the Ziz Gorges are experienced through movement, roadside stops and viewpoints, so the quality of the visit depends heavily on timing, light and safe places to pull over. Morning and late afternoon are particularly beautiful, when the rock faces carry warmer tones and shadows reveal the structure of the cliffs. Travelers should allow time rather than rushing through, as the gorges introduce the geography that sustains the entire oasis system downstream. For photographers, road-trippers and desert-bound visitors, this is one of the defining sights of the Ziz Valley.
