Sijilmasa & Tafilalet Historic Zone
Sijilmasa and the Tafilalet historic zone provide the deepest historical context for a Ziz Valley journey. Med-O-Med identifies Sijilmasa as the old capital of Tafilalet, founded in AD 757 on the Saharan caravan route from the Niger River region to Tangier. For centuries, it was one of the most important trans-Saharan trade nodes, especially associated with gold and desert commerce. This history explains why the lower oasis landscape around Rissani and Tafilalet is so often paired with the Ziz Valley, even when travelers are primarily following the river corridor from Errachidia to Erfoud. The region is also central to Moroccan dynastic history, as multiple sources connect the rise of the Alaouite dynasty in the seventeenth century with the Tafilalet oasis. Visiting this area turns the valley from a scenic drive into a route through trade, power and settlement history. The surviving landscape is not a single polished monument in the style of an imperial-city palace; rather, it is a cultural zone of ruins, ksour, palm groves and market towns that require interpretation. A local guide can greatly improve the experience, especially for travelers interested in caravan routes and dynastic origins. Sijilmasa and Tafilalet are essential for understanding why this southeastern corridor mattered far beyond its oasis agriculture.
