Rissani, Sijilmasa & Tafilalet
Rissani and the Sijilmasa–Tafilalet zone form the historical southern extension of many Ziz Valley journeys. Although not always included in the narrowest definition of the valley, this area is deeply connected to the same oasis and caravan landscape. Sijilmasa was founded in AD 757 on the Saharan caravan route linking the Niger River region with northern Morocco and Tangier, and it became one of the great medieval nodes of trans-Saharan commerce, especially associated with gold and desert trade. The broader Tafilalet is also central to Moroccan dynastic history because the Alaouite dynasty rose from this southeastern oasis region in the seventeenth century. Today, travelers usually encounter the area through Rissani’s market-town atmosphere, historic associations and proximity to Erfoud and Merzouga. The landscape is one of palm groves, ksour, open plains and desert-edge settlements, providing a strong sense of continuity between oasis agriculture and long-distance trade. Visiting this district gives historical depth to the scenic drive through the Ziz Valley, transforming the route from a beautiful road trip into a journey through one of Morocco’s most important Saharan cultural corridors. It is best explored with a guide or a well-planned itinerary, especially for travelers interested in caravan history, Tafilalet heritage and the origins of the modern Moroccan dynasty.
