Errachidia (Gateway City)
Errachidia is the administrative and transport gateway to the Ziz Valley, serving as the practical base for travelers arriving by air, bus or private transfer before continuing toward Erfoud, Rissani and Merzouga. Formerly known as Ksar es-Souk, the city now functions as the capital of the Drâa-Tafilalet region and anchors the road network that links the Middle Atlas with the Sahara approach. The atmosphere is functional and local rather than heavily touristic, with hotels, cafés, transport offices and services that make it a convenient overnight stop. Nearby sights include Hassan Addakhil Dam, the Ziz Gorges access road and Source Bleue de Meski, all of which can be visited before descending into the palm-grove corridor. For visitors arriving at Moulay Ali Cherif Airport, Errachidia provides the first encounter with the arid oasis landscape of southeastern Morocco. It is especially useful for travelers who want to break the long journey between northern Morocco and the desert, or for those beginning a private tour through the valley. While it does not have the dense monumentality of Morocco’s imperial cities, its value lies in access, orientation and proximity to the region’s most photogenic natural and cultural sites. Errachidia is ideal for road-trippers, desert-bound travelers and anyone seeking a calm staging point before exploring the Ziz Valley in depth.
