Erfoud (Dates & Fossils)

Erfoud, also written Arfoud, is the best-known market town on the lower Ziz and Tafilalet route, famous for dates, fossils and its position on the approach to Merzouga. The town has long served travelers moving between the oasis corridor and the Sahara, and today it remains a practical stop for fuel, food, shopping and overnight stays. Erfoud’s date culture is especially prominent, with travel sources describing an annual Date Festival usually held in the third week of October to celebrate the harvest. The town is also strongly associated with fossil mining and artisan workshops, where visitors can see ammonites, trilobites, orthoceras and fossil marble transformed into decorative objects, tables and washbasins. The atmosphere is busier and more commercial than the smaller oasis villages, but still distinctly tied to the surrounding landscape of palms, desert and geological heritage. Travelers often visit Erfoud as part of a route that includes Ziz Valley viewpoints, Rissani market, Sijilmasa history and the Erg Chebbi dunes. Accommodation ranges from simple local hotels to desert-route guesthouses, making it a useful base before continuing farther south. Erfoud is ideal for visitors interested in markets, date products, fossils and the practical transition from oasis Morocco to the Saharan edge.
