Telouet Kasbah
Telouet Kasbah is the most important historical monument associated with the Tizi n'Tichka detour. Located near the old caravan route over the Atlas Mountains to Marrakech, it was linked to the powerful El Glaoui family, whose influence was tied to the control and taxation of trade moving between northern Morocco and the Sahara routes. The kasbah has been described as a fortress and former seat of the family, with architectural remains that include corridors, arcades, patios and traces of fine decorative work. Its location explains the strategic importance of the wider Tizi n'Tichka corridor long before the modern road was built. Travelers usually reach Telouet by leaving the main N9 and following the detour toward the village, often continuing through the Ounila Valley afterward. Access requires caution: some recent travel reports have noted closure or exterior-only viewing after structural damage from the 2023 earthquake, while other sources describe general visiting in more conventional terms. Because no official current opening source was verified, travelers should check locally before making the detour. Even when viewed from outside, the kasbah provides a powerful link between mountain geography, regional politics and the caravan history that shaped this part of Morocco.
