Telouet Detour
The Telouet Detour is one of the most rewarding side trips from Tizi n'Tichka, leading from the high road toward a village and kasbah closely linked with the El Glaoui family. Telouet Kasbah is described as a fortress and former seat of power on the old caravan route over the Atlas Mountains to Marrakech, reflecting the wealth once generated by controlling trade between northern Morocco and the Sahara routes. The surviving palace complex has been known for its corridors, arcades, patios, decorative materials and traces of political importance, though current access should be verified locally because post-earthquake structural concerns have been reported. The detour also introduces travelers to a slower mountain rhythm than the main N9, with smaller roads, village scenery and a stronger sense of the historic passageways that predated the modern highway. It is not a formal district in the urban sense, but it functions as a cultural zone of the Tizi n'Tichka experience. Travelers should allow extra time, avoid rushing the return to the main road, and remain flexible about opening conditions. For history enthusiasts, the Telouet area provides the clearest link between the modern pass, older caravan movement and the regional power of the Glaoui family.
