The Summit Pass

The Summit Pass

The Summit Pass is the symbolic heart of Tizi n'Tichka, the High Atlas crossing that links the southeast of Marrakech with Ouarzazate on Morocco's N9 national road. The elevation is widely given as 2,260 m, placing travelers above a dramatic mountain landscape of ridges, switchbacks and long views toward the pre-Saharan south. Unlike an urban district, this area is defined by the road itself, the summit marker, and the panoramic pullouts where drivers pause to photograph the route. The atmosphere changes quickly with the season: spring and autumn often bring clearer driving conditions, while winter can introduce snow, ice and temporary closures after heavy storms. The road is paved and heavily used, but its tight hairpins and steep grades demand cautious driving, especially for travelers unfamiliar with mountain roads. The summit is not a place for elaborate sightseeing infrastructure; its appeal lies in the visual drama of crossing the High Atlas and understanding why this passage became such an important link between Marrakech, Ouarzazate and the caravan landscapes beyond. Travelers should treat it as a high-mountain environment, allowing time for slow travel, weather checks and relaxed photo stops rather than rushing through the bends.
