Ounila Valley Route

The Ounila Valley Route is a historic and scenic passage that extends the Tizi n'Tichka experience beyond the summit itself. It links the Telouet area with Aït Benhaddou by a secondary road through a narrow river valley, passing villages, kasbahs, gardens and bands of colorful geology. Before the modern Marrakech–Ouarzazate road became the primary crossing, this wider corridor formed part of the movement between northern Moroccan cities and the caravan routes of the Sahara. That historical role explains the presence of fortified architecture and the importance of local leaders who controlled trade through the region. Today, the route is favored by travelers who want a slower and more atmospheric alternative to remaining entirely on the N9. It passes settlements such as Anmiter and Tamdakhte and gradually descends from High Atlas terrain toward the fortified landscapes near Aït Benhaddou. The road should be approached with patience, as conditions and travel times can vary. For photographers and cultural travelers, the valley offers one of the richest combinations of scenery and history near Tizi n'Tichka. It functions as a living monument to the older pathways that connected the mountains with the south.
