Ounila Valley
The Ounila Valley is the scenic and historic corridor that extends from the Telouet area toward Aït Benhaddou, offering one of the most memorable alternatives to simply staying on the main N9. Sources describe it as a narrow river valley descending from the High Atlas toward Aït Benhaddou, with villages, kasbahs, gardens and colorful geology along the way. The P1506 route links the Tizi n'Tichka and Telouet area with the famous ksar near Ouarzazate, passing through settlements such as Anmiter, Tizgui N'Barda and Tamdakhte. Historically, this valley formed part of the older passage between northern Moroccan cities and trans-Saharan caravan routes, giving the drive a depth beyond its scenery. The atmosphere is quieter and more intimate than the main pass road, with mud-brick architecture, cultivated patches and changing rock colors revealing the transition between mountain and southern landscapes. Travelers should expect a slower journey, narrower sections and more frequent photo stops. It is particularly attractive in spring and during clear autumn conditions, when the valley's gardens and geology stand out against the dry slopes. This area is ideal for travelers who want a richer cultural route between Tizi n'Tichka, Telouet and Aït Benhaddou.
