The Palmeraie (Historic Palm Grove)
The Skoura palmeraie is the historic heart of the oasis, a broad palm-filled landscape set within the arid plains east of Ouarzazate. Unlike a formal urban district, it functions as a living agricultural zone, with date palms, small cultivated plots, earthen garden walls, and narrow lanes connecting traditional homes and kasbah lodges. The atmosphere here is quiet and deeply rural, offering a strong contrast to the main road and modern town. Visitors come for slow walks, cycling routes, kasbah stays, and views of southern Moroccan rammed-earth architecture softened by green palms. Accommodation in this area is typically found in guesthouses, ecolodges, restored kasbahs, and converted farmhouses, many of them designed around shaded courtyards and garden terraces. The palmeraie is also the best place to understand why Skoura is described as a verdant oasis in an otherwise dry landscape. Water, agriculture, and fortified architecture are woven together here, reflecting the oasis’s historic role along caravan routes. This area is ideal for travelers who want tranquility, cultural atmosphere, and a slower overnight stop between Ouarzazate, Dadès Valley, Rose Valley, Todra Gorge, and the Sahara routes.
