The Main Cascades of Ouzoud

The Main Cascades are the defining natural monument of Ouzoud and one of Morocco’s most famous waterfall landscapes. The falls are commonly described as about 110 meters high and descending in three tiers into the gorge below. Source wording differs slightly on the river system, with several references emphasizing the El-Abid River gorge and another identifying the immediate watercourse as Oued Tissakht. The safest description is therefore a 110 meter, multi-tier cascade system in the El-Abid river and gorge area, with some sources identifying the immediate watercourse as Oued Tissakht. The visual character of the site is shaped by falling water, red and rocky cliffs, natural pools, olive groves, and viewpoints on both upper and lower levels. The experience changes throughout the visit: from above, the falls read as a wide landscape; from the base, they become a powerful vertical wall of mist and sound. This is the essential attraction for first-time visitors and the anchor around which all walks, cafés, boat activity, and wildlife viewing are organized.
