Mifis Mines

The Mifis mines and surrounding old mine areas form one of the more rugged excursion stops on 4x4 circuits around Merzouga. Unlike Erg Chebbi, which is defined by soft orange dunes, this landscape introduces visitors to darker rocky terrain, abandoned working areas, mineral traces, and the harsher geology of the desert fringe. The mines are commonly mentioned in local desert itineraries together with Khamlia, nomad-family stops, fossil areas, black desert plains, and panoramic viewpoints around the dune field. They are not presented in the research as a formal monument with a fixed visitor center or published entrance system, so the experience depends heavily on local guiding. For this reason, travelers should visit with reputable drivers who understand safe access, road conditions, and the cultural sensitivity of stopping in working or formerly worked landscapes. The appeal of the site lies in contrast. After the smooth curves of Erg Chebbi, the mine areas reveal a more industrial and geological side of the Sahara, reminding visitors that the region is shaped not only by tourism but also by minerals, fossils, trade routes, and local livelihoods. Photography can be striking, especially where dark stone, pale tracks, and distant dunes meet. The Mifis mines are best suited to travelers taking a half-day or full-day 4x4 loop rather than those focused only on a camel-camp experience. They add texture, history, and a grounded sense of place to the Merzouga desert circuit.
