Merzouga Village
Merzouga Village is the practical heart of the Erg Chebbi desert experience and the most convenient base for travelers arriving by bus, private transfer, or self-drive vehicle. Located in southeastern Morocco near the Algerian border, the village functions less like a formal urban district and more like a compact desert service center. Its streets gather guesthouses, small restaurants, tour agencies, souvenir shops, and departure points for camel treks into the dunes. The atmosphere is relaxed and purposeful, with most daily life organized around sunrise departures, sunset camel caravans, and the rhythm of desert excursions. Accommodation ranges from simple family-run auberges to comfortable riad-style guesthouses with terraces facing the sand. Dining is generally informal, built around Moroccan staples such as tagine, couscous, omelets, bread, tea, and camp-style dinners arranged through lodgings. Shopping is small-scale and visitor-focused, with scarves, desert clothing, fossils, carpets, and practical supplies available before heading into the dunes. The village is ideal for first-time visitors who want easy logistics, direct access to guides, and the ability to compare camel, quad, 4x4, and camp options in person. Merzouga doesn't have the monuments of Morocco's imperial cities, but it puts you at the edge of Erg Chebbi, one of the country's largest dune fields. Travelers should plan with desert conditions in mind, carrying cash, water, sun protection, and warm layers for cold winter nights.
