Khamlia Village

Khamlia is a small cultural village near Merzouga, commonly described as lying about 7 kilometers south of the main settlement and close to the Erg Chebbi dunes. It is best known for Gnawa, or Gnaoua, music traditions, with residents often described as descendants of sub-Saharan African communities whose oral histories, rhythms, and instruments form a distinctive part of Morocco’s Saharan culture. Visits typically include mint tea, live music, explanations of instruments, and opportunities to learn about local heritage in an intimate setting. Khamlia is usually approached as a day-trip stop rather than a primary accommodation district, though guesthouses and camps may exist in the surrounding area. The village is often included in 4x4 desert circuits that also visit nomad families, black desert terrain, fossil areas, and dune viewpoints. The atmosphere is quieter and more community-based than the tour-agency streets of Merzouga, making it especially valuable for travelers who want context beyond the landscape itself. Shopping is modest, focused on small crafts or cultural support rather than large commercial souks. Dining may be arranged as part of a visit or through nearby lodgings, but travelers should not expect a broad restaurant scene. Khamlia is ideal for respectful cultural travelers, music enthusiasts, and visitors interested in the human stories of the Sahara fringe. As with all cultural visits, clear pricing, direct support, and sensitivity around photography are important.
