Erg Chebbi Dunes
Erg Chebbi is the defining natural monument of Merzouga and the reason most travelers journey to this remote corner of southeastern Morocco. The dune field rises directly from the desert plain beside the village, creating a dramatic wall of orange sand that shifts color throughout the day. Erg Chebbi stretches for more than 20 kilometers, with dunes rising high above the surrounding terrain. Travel sources commonly cite heights above 150 meters, with the tallest crests reaching roughly 150-160 meters above the plain. The landscape functions as the stage for Merzouga’s essential experiences: camel trekking, overnight desert camps, sandboarding, quad biking, 4x4 loops, sunrise walks, sunset photography, and stargazing. Unlike a built monument, Erg Chebbi is constantly changing. Wind smooths the ridges, footprints vanish overnight, and the same viewpoint can feel entirely different between noon glare and late-afternoon gold. Most visitors reach the dunes from Merzouga or Hassilabied by camel, 4x4, ATV, or on foot with a guide. Desert camps range from simple bivouacs to luxury tented accommodation with private facilities and arranged dinners. The experience is most comfortable in spring and autumn, when temperatures are milder, though winter nights can be cold. As the primary attraction in Merzouga, Erg Chebbi delivers the classic image of the Moroccan Sahara, along with a real introduction to how quickly desert conditions can turn on you.
