Erg Chebbi Dune Zone
The Erg Chebbi Dune Zone is the defining landscape of Merzouga and one of the most recognized desert settings in Morocco. Rather than a built neighborhood, it is a vast field of wind-shaped dunes stretching beside the villages and camps that serve Sahara travelers. Erg Chebbi stretches for more than 20 kilometers and several kilometers wide, with dunes rising dramatically above the surrounding plain. Travel sources commonly cite towering heights above 150 meters, with the tallest crests reaching roughly 150-160 meters above the flat terrain. The atmosphere changes constantly with the light. At dawn, the ridges appear soft and cool; by sunset, they glow orange and red before giving way to dark skies known for stargazing. Activities here include camel trekking, overnight desert camps, sandboarding, quad biking, 4x4 loops, photography, and sunrise or sunset walks along the dune crests. Accommodation inside or near the dune zone ranges from simple bivouac-style camps to luxury tented camps reached by camel, 4x4, ATV, or direct transfer. Dining is usually included in camp stays, with tagines, bread, tea, and evening music around a fire. The area delivers the classic Sahara experience, but it requires sensible preparation. Heat, dehydration, shifting sand, and darkness can make solo wandering risky, so guided routes are strongly recommended beyond the visible village edge.
