Dayet Srij Lake

Dayet Srij is the principal seasonal lake and wetland associated with Merzouga, offering a striking contrast to the dry dunes of Erg Chebbi when water is present. Also spelled Dayet Srji, the site is described by travel sources as an ephemeral basin that fills after rain and may attract flamingos, migratory birds, and other wildlife. Its exact position is described differently across sources, with references placing it near Merzouga, Hassilabied, and the western side of Erg Chebbi, but the practical value for travelers is clear: it is a nearby birdwatching and photography stop whose appearance depends entirely on recent weather. In wetter months, the lake can reflect the dunes and create one of the most unexpected scenes in the region. In summer or dry years, it may become a bare basin or salt-flat, so visitors should ask local guides or guesthouses about current conditions before planning around it. The site is commonly included in gentle excursions, walking routes, cycling outings, and 4x4 loops around the dune field. There's no formal entrance fee here, and it's best treated as a fragile natural area rather than a developed attraction. Early morning and late afternoon are the best times for light, lower temperatures, and possible bird activity. Dayet Srij adds ecological depth to a Merzouga itinerary, showing that the Sahara fringe is not only sand but also seasonal water, migration, and delicate desert life.
