Dayet Srij Seasonal Lake

Dayet Srij, also spelled Dayet Srji, is a seasonal lake and wetland near Merzouga, Hassilabied, and the Erg Chebbi dunes. It is one of the most atmospheric natural stops in the area when water is present, reflecting the dunes and attracting flamingos, migratory birds, and desert wildlife after sufficient rainfall. The lake is not permanent, and sources vary slightly on its exact position around the dune field, which reflects the practical reality of seasonal water, local naming, and changing desert conditions. In dry summers or dry years, visitors may find an open salt-flat or basin rather than a lake. When full, however, Dayet Srij offers a striking contrast between water, reeds, birds, sand, and distant village life. It is frequently visited by walkers, cyclists, birdwatchers, and 4x4 circuits moving between Merzouga, Hassilabied, and the dune viewpoints. There's no formal entrance fee or managed visitor setup here, so treat it as a natural site rather than a ticketed attraction. The best experience is usually early morning or late afternoon, when temperatures are lower and bird activity may be more visible. Dayet Srij is ideal for photographers and travelers who want to see how fragile and varied the desert ecosystem can be. Because water is not guaranteed, guides or guesthouses should be asked about current conditions before planning a visit around it.
