Fes Jdid (The Marinid Royal Quarter)

Fes Jdid is the historic “new” city of Fes, founded by the Marinid dynasty in 1276 as a royal and administrative quarter beside the older medina. Although its name means new Fes, the district is itself one of the city’s most important medieval areas, characterized by monumental gates, palace walls, military structures, and streets that link the royal precinct with commercial and residential zones. The Dar al-Makhzen, or Royal Palace, dominates the district, though visitors usually view its famous exterior gates rather than enter the palace itself. Nearby are the historic Mellah, Bab Semmarine, Bab Dekkakin, and other major entrances associated with the fortifications of Fes Jdid. Compared with Fes el-Bali, the streets can feel slightly more open and easier to navigate, while still retaining a strong historic atmosphere. Shopping focuses on local markets, gold and jewelry areas, textiles, food stalls, and everyday goods rather than only tourist souvenirs. Accommodation is more limited than in the old medina, but the district is well placed for travelers who want access to both royal monuments and the wider city. Fes Jdid is ideal for visitors interested in Marinid history, palace architecture, Jewish heritage, and the defensive systems that shaped the imperial city.
